Ellis “Red” Redding, a longtime inmate who can obtain almost anything, narrates the arrival of Andy Dufresne at Maine’s Shawshank State Prison. Formerly a bank vice president, Andy is serving life for murdering his wife and her lover, though he insists he is innocent. He asks Red for a rock hammer and later a large Rita Hayworth poster, small requests within a prison governed by corruption and violence. Andy’s financial skills soon make him useful to the administration, while his campaign for a larger library creates opportunities beyond mere survival. Through Red’s watchful account, the novella follows a friendship shaped by confinement and contrasts the institution’s power to crush hope with one prisoner’s patient refusal to surrender it.
