As a boy in a small Maine town, Jamie Morton is captivated by Charles Jacobs, a Methodist minister whose fascination with electricity seems capable of miracles. After an experiment restores Jamie’s brother’s voice, Jacobs wins local admiration, but personal tragedy drives him from the church. Decades later, Jamie is a musician struggling with addiction when he encounters Jacobs performing an electrified healing act. The minister cures him, yet the treatment produces disturbing side effects. Jamie begins tracing Jacobs’s former patients and finds troubling consequences, occult study, and an obsession that has only deepened with time. Their paths converge again around a gravely ill woman and a final experiment, binding faith, grief, addiction, and scientific ambition into a steadily darkening work of supernatural horror.
