In the French Algerian city of Oran, a plague sweeps through the population and exposes residents to a shared crisis. Doctors, vacationers, fugitives, and others reveal different ways the disease shapes life across the city. Rather than narrowing its attention to a single type of person, La Peste considers the epidemic through a varied group of people caught within it. Albert Camus uses their experiences to explore questions of destiny and the human condition, connecting the immediate effects of disease with larger questions about how people understand their circumstances and respond when ordinary life is overtaken by collective suffering.
