Jack Reacher enters a suspected smuggling operation through a deception designed to make him indispensable. Working unofficially with DEA agent Susan Duffy, he participates in the staged kidnapping of Zachary Beck’s son, then appears as the rescuer and gains access to Beck’s household as a bodyguard. Inside, Reacher must identify the operation’s true structure, contend with imminent violence, and protect his cover after discovering another agent already in place. The assignment also serves a private pursuit: Beck may lead him to Francis Xavier Quinn, a man who escaped justice after murdering one of Reacher’s military police colleagues years earlier. Narrated by Reacher, the thriller combines undercover maneuvering with a personal reckoning in which every useful lie increases the danger of exposure.
