Miles Halter, a Florida teenager obsessed with famous last words, leaves his uneventful life for Culver Creek Preparatory School in Alabama. Renamed Pudge by his new friends, he enters a close-knit world of dormitory pranks, school rivalries, rule-breaking, and intense loyalties. At its center is Alaska Young, charismatic and unpredictable, whose wit and emotional volatility deepen Miles’s fascination with her even as she keeps their relationship platonic. When the group is confronted by an unexplained death, Miles’s romantic longing becomes a search for meaning, responsibility, and forgiveness. The novel moves between irreverent boarding-school comedy and grief, asking how young people live with questions that cannot be neatly answered.
