Autumn and Finn were once inseparable, bound by childhood intimacy and the expectation that they would remain part of each other’s lives. By high school, they have separated into different social worlds: Autumn has a boyfriend and a close circle of friends, while Finn has become popular. They mostly ignore one another, yet recurring encounters revive Autumn’s conviction that their distance may be a mistake. As their circumstances and relationships shift, she measures the life she is living against the one she imagines they might have shared. Told through Autumn’s reflective perspective, the novel is a melancholic coming-of-age story about first love, missed timing, and the painful power of counterfactual thinking when two people cannot entirely escape their shared past.
