Quentin Jacobsen has spent years admiring his bold, mysterious neighbor Margo Roth Spiegelman from the safety of suburban Orlando. Just before graduation, Margo climbs into his window and recruits him for an elaborate night of revenge. By morning she has vanished, leaving clues that Quentin interprets as an invitation to find her. With his friends, he follows references through an abandoned mini-mall, unfinished subdivisions, and the “paper towns” marked on maps, eventually abandoning graduation for a drive from Florida to New York. The search mixes mystery, road-trip comedy, and coming-of-age tension, but its deeper challenge is perceptual: Quentin must confront the difference between knowing another person and turning that person into a story that satisfies him.
