Description

After his wife’s death, retired Derry resident Ralph Roberts develops insomnia so severe that ordinary reality begins to split open. He sees colored auras around people and perceives strange beings invisible to everyone else. With his friend Lois, who shares this altered sight, Ralph encounters mysterious bald doctors and a rogue figure capable of cutting lives short. They learn that their sleeplessness has been induced so they can intervene in a struggle between opposing forces known as the Purpose and the Random. Their immediate task is to prevent a violent attack on a crowded civic event, but neither side fully explains its designs. The novel joins supernatural horror to an aging widower’s grief, asking whether human choice can survive manipulation by powers that treat individual lives as instruments.
