Horacio Oliveira, an Argentine intellectual living in Paris, drifts through a passionate and unstable relationship with La Maga, whose intuitive engagement with life challenges his compulsive analysis. Around them, the Serpent Club debates art, philosophy, and meaning while ordinary responsibilities become harder to evade. Later sections shift toward Buenos Aires, doubling characters and situations as Horacio’s search for certainty grows more disorienting. The reader can proceed conventionally through the opening sequence or follow a prescribed hopscotch order among the novel’s 155 chapters, including fragments that alter earlier impressions. First published in 1963, Rayuela makes form part of its subject, turning love, exile, language, and failed understanding into an active collaboration between book and reader.
