James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time is a nonfiction book composed of two essays on race and religion in the United States. The first, written as a letter to Baldwin’s teenage nephew, situates the boy’s life within American racial history. The longer second essay draws on Baldwin’s youth in Harlem and his experiences with the Christian church and the Nation of Islam to examine the relationship between race and religion. Written during segregation, the essays use personal testimony to show how racism operates in lived experience, help white readers understand Black Americans’ struggle for equal rights, challenge dominant white interpretations of race relations, and call on the country to confront racial injustice.
