On Nevada’s desolate Highway 50, deputy Collie Entragian stops passing motorists on arbitrary charges and carries them into the nearly abandoned mining town of Desperation. His captives—including the Carver family, writer Johnny Marinville, and veterinarian Tom Billingsley—soon realize that their brutal jailer is a vessel for Tak, an ancient evil able to possess human bodies and command the desert’s coyotes, buzzards, spiders, and scorpions. After eleven-year-old David Carver helps free the prisoners, the survivors gather in an abandoned theater and search for a way out. Escape alone will not end the threat: they must confront the force released from an old mine. King combines large-scale survival horror with a spiritual struggle over faith, sacrifice, and the uses of human freedom.
