In an affluent Boston suburb, Piet Hanema moves through a close circle of married friends whose parties, leisure, secret affairs, and partner-swapping have made infidelity part of the community’s social routine. Piet becomes involved with Georgene, Foxy, and Bea while spouses trade confidences, tolerate betrayals, and neglect the children at the edges of their lives. When Foxy becomes pregnant by Piet, their search for a discreet abortion draws other partners into a bargain that exposes the limits of the group’s supposed sophistication. Angela, Piet’s wife, presses him toward conventional commitment as private desire collides with public consequence. The novel examines suburban marriage as a shifting arrangement of appetite, jealousy, self-deception, and emotional damage, combining intimate realism with cool social satire.
