Description

In 1988, Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom is a retired former basketball star dividing his time between Florida and Pennsylvania. Overweight, depressed, and suffering from serious heart trouble, he clings to food, television, memories, and the reflected athletic promise of his granddaughter. A medical crisis during an outing with her makes his decline impossible to dismiss. At the same time, his son Nelson’s cocaine addiction and theft threaten the family automobile dealership, drawing Harry back into conflicts he can neither control nor escape. Set against a changing late-twentieth-century America, the novel follows an aging man confronting bodily failure, damaged family bonds, and the erosion of the exceptional destiny he once imagined for himself.
