Ifemelu and Obinze fall in love as teenagers in Lagos, imagining futures beyond a Nigeria ruled by military dictatorship. Their paths divide when Ifemelu leaves for an American university and Obinze, denied a U.S. visa, later lives unlawfully in London. In America, Ifemelu discovers that race has acquired a force and vocabulary unfamiliar to her; she eventually turns her sharp observations about Black life into a successful blog. Years later, with Obinze established as a wealthy property developer in Nigeria, she decides to return home. Moving among Lagos, the United States, and Britain, the novel joins an enduring love story to an unsparing examination of migration, race, class, accent, and the unstable meanings of home.
