Born into the brutal wilderness of the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, White Fang learns early that survival depends on hunger, strength, and submission to power. Taken into an Indigenous camp, the wolfdog pup encounters human authority and immediate hostility from other dogs. Constant persecution makes him solitary and dangerous, a fighter whose ferocity earns both fear and respect. At Fort Yukon, he is sold to a man who forces him into violent contests against other animals, deepening the lessons cruelty has taught him. Told largely through White Fang’s experience, the novel follows his movement from wildness toward domestication while examining how environment and treatment shape behavior—and whether trust can emerge after a life governed by violence.
