Mateo and Rufus receive separate calls from Death-Cast informing them that they will die sometime within the next twenty-four hours. Mateo, anxious and withdrawn, downloads an app designed to connect people seeking company on their final day. Rufus, already fleeing trouble when his warning arrives, turns to the same service rather than face death alone. The two strangers agree to accompany each other through the city, visiting Mateo’s hospitalized father, his best friend, and her baby daughter while confronting relationships and futures they expected to have more time to repair. As their friendship deepens, each pushes the other beyond old habits. The novel uses its foreknown ending to ask how intimacy, courage, and ordinary choices change when time becomes brutally finite.
