Description

On his thirtieth birthday, bank clerk Josef K. is arrested by unidentified officials who refuse to tell him what crime he has committed. He remains free to work and conduct his ordinary affairs, yet his case steadily invades them, summoning him to obscure hearings in cramped attic rooms and binding him to procedures no one will clearly explain. K. denounces the court’s absurdity while seeking help from a bedridden lawyer introduced by his anxious uncle, but every attempt to understand the system draws him further into its secretive hierarchy. Kafka turns an unexplained prosecution into a bleakly comic nightmare about bureaucracy, guilt, authority, and the helplessness of demanding reason from an institution that recognizes no obligation to provide it.
