In the summer of 1963, sixteen-year-old friends Dwight, Rusty, and Slim discover advertisements for a midnight attraction featuring Valeria, supposedly the world’s only living captive vampire. Eager for excitement in their rural community, they trespass into forbidden Jank’s Field, hoping to see her before the performance. An encounter with a dog separates them and turns their expedition into a chain of increasingly dangerous misadventures. When the boys finally reach the one-night show, its lurid promises conceal a sinister scheme involving the vampires themselves. Blending coming-of-age comedy with graphic horror, the novel follows three friends whose curiosity, loyalty, and emerging sexuality are tested as a summer adventure carries them beyond the safety of childhood.
