Joanna Eberhart, a photographer and young mother, leaves New York for the polished Connecticut suburb of Stepford. She soon notices a disturbing pattern: women who were once independent activists or accomplished professionals become submissive homemakers devoted entirely to domestic perfection. The women insist nothing is wrong, while Joanna’s husband dismisses her mounting fears. Suspecting that the local men’s club is responsible, she investigates poisoning, coercion, and the advanced technical skills possessed by its members. Each apparent conversion narrows the distance between Joanna and the threat she cannot yet prove. The novel blends suburban horror with feminist satire, turning immaculate houses and compliant marriages into instruments for examining enforced conformity, patriarchal control, and the erasure of women’s autonomy.
