Description

An unnamed foreman for a Scottish fencing company earns a promotion and is placed in charge of Tam and Richie, two laborers whose easygoing habits conflict with owner Donald’s relentless pursuit of efficiency. As the crew moves between jobs, ordinary delays and workplace mishaps acquire increasingly unsettling consequences, while the foreman tries to satisfy management without fully separating himself from the men he supervises. His flat, literal account never makes clear whether he recognizes the absurdity around him or merely accepts it as part of the job. Tragicomic and deliberately repetitive, the novel turns manual labor into a study of punishment, reward, obedience, and the strange ways workers absorb and reproduce the systems that control them.
