Ten-year-old Michael has barely settled into a new home when his premature baby sister’s serious heart condition fills the family with fear. In the crumbling garage, he discovers a frail, filthy man hiding among dead insects and old boxes. Michael brings him food and medicine, then shares the secret with Mina, a homeschooled neighbor whose fascination with birds, art, nature, and William Blake gives her a different way of seeing him. The children call the stranger Skellig and begin to suspect he may not be entirely human. As the baby approaches heart surgery, Michael’s care for both vulnerable figures draws illness, flight, and transformation into an ambiguous story poised between domestic realism and the miraculous.
