Karana grows up among the Nicoleño people of Ghalas-at, fishing, gathering roots, and hunting along their island’s coast. After a dispute with Russian fur hunters ends in a battle that kills her father and many tribal men, missionaries arrange to evacuate the survivors. Karana leaves the departing ship to find her brother and is stranded when it sails away. Soon alone, she must break with custom and teach herself to make weapons, build shelter and canoes, secure food, and withstand danger. Her desire for vengeance against the island’s wild dogs gradually changes through her bond with Rontu, while an unexpected friendship with an Aleut girl exposes her loneliness. The survival story joins practical resourcefulness to an evolving relationship with animals, solitude, and home.
