Soon after his twenty-first birthday, Anodos discovers a fairy inside an inherited desk and wakes to find his room opening into Fairy Land. He wanders through a dreamlike realm of flower fairies, mobile tree spirits, threatening Ash and Alder Trees, and a mysterious palace whose statues seem alive. His pursuit of an idealized feminine beauty, embodied by the Marble Lady, repeatedly draws him toward temptation and danger. Meanwhile, a nightmare spirit and a malevolent shadow follow and torment him, darkening both the landscape and his desires. Structured as a shifting otherworldly journey, the novel blends wonder, romance, and menace while tracing Anodos’s struggle with vanity, longing, fear, and the consequences of pursuing an ideal he cannot possess.
