Greg Heffley is accustomed to modern conveniences, so his town’s voluntary retreat from electronics leaves him confronting a version of old-fashioned life for which he is poorly prepared. What begins as a community experiment in whether things were better before constant technology soon creates frustration at home and tension across town. Greg’s efforts to preserve comfort and avoid embarrassment repeatedly collide with expectations of self-reliance, face-to-face participation, and shared sacrifice. As the adults celebrate a supposedly simpler past, he discovers that nostalgia looks different when he has to live inside it. Told through Greg’s self-interested comic perspective, the book uses the technology break to test family patience, community spirit, and one boy’s limited ability to adapt when familiar shortcuts disappear.
