Drawn from Douglas R. Hofstadter’s early-1980s Scientific American essays, Metamagical Themas explores the patterns that connect minds, symbols, games, machines, and works of art. Its annotated pieces move from self-reference, language, and analogy to artificial intelligence and cognitive science, repeatedly asking how meaning and intelligence emerge from formal rules. Hofstadter uses Lisp programming to approach Gödel’s incompleteness theorem, Rubik’s Cube to examine problem-solving, and strategic dilemmas to develop the idea of superrationality in relation to Cold War and environmental choices. Dialogues add a playful conversational counterpoint, while the rule-changing game Nomic becomes another experiment in systems examining themselves. The result is an interconnected intellectual cabinet of puzzles whose subjects continually illuminate one another.
