Prompted by a Papua New Guinean man named Yali, Jared Diamond asks why wealth, technology, and political power became so unevenly distributed among human societies. His answer rejects inherited intelligence or moral superiority and instead compares the geographic and environmental opportunities available across continents during the past 13,000 years. Domesticable plants and animals encouraged settled agriculture; food surpluses supported larger populations, specialists, bureaucracies, and states; and prolonged contact with livestock fostered disease resistance. Eurasia’s east-west axis also eased the spread of crops, animals, and inventions. Moving from ecology to conquest, Diamond presents guns, germs, and steel as linked consequences of regional conditions, explaining global inequality through accumulated advantages rather than differences in human capacity.
