A father and his young son ride a motorcycle through the American Northwest, but the summer journey soon opens onto a more difficult interior landscape. Between roads, campsites, weather, and mechanical repairs, the narrator delivers philosophical reflections he calls Chautauquas, using motorcycle maintenance to question the supposed divide between technical reason and aesthetic experience. His search for a unifying idea of Quality also forces him to confront memories of an earlier self and the existential crisis that reshaped his life. The book moves between travel narrative, fictionalized autobiography, and philosophical inquiry, tying abstract questions to tools, relationships, and daily choices. Its central concern is how disciplined attention might reconcile opposing ways of understanding the world and help a person live better.
