Mason & Dixon is narrated by Reverend Wicks Cherrycoke, an unorthodox clergyman who entertains his extended family on a cold December evening. Cherrycoke claims that he traveled with Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, and his account of their lives becomes the novel’s expansive frame. Thomas Pynchon blends biography and history with fantasy, legend, speculation, and outright invention, making the telling itself as important as the events being told. Because Cherrycoke occupies the roles of witness, performer, and storyteller, fact and embellishment continually overlap. The novel invites readers to follow Mason and Dixon through a past reconstructed not as fixed record, but as an energetic mixture of history and imagination.
