Los Angeles, 1970: private investigator Larry “Doc” Sportello is habitually stoned but alert to the unease spreading through a counterculture being overtaken by surveillance, organized money, and development. When his former girlfriend asks him to prevent a plot against real-estate magnate Mickey Wolfmann, Doc is drawn into a case that expands after Wolfmann disappears. A missing bodyguard, unpaid debts, sudden violence, and the rumored survival of musician Coy Harlingen connect investigations that refuse to remain separate. Clues repeatedly lead toward the Golden Fang, a name that may designate an organization, a vessel, or something larger. Pynchon bends the private-eye novel into a hazy, darkly comic search through a city where paranoia often sounds reasonable and every explanation opens another route into the maze.
