Sophie Foster returns to find the Lost Cities transformed by upheaval, with war approaching and the Neverseen continuing their attacks. Trust has become dangerous: allies may be compromised, familiar institutions offer little security, and a warning suggests that the people Sophie loves could become targets. When a mysterious symbol begins yielding successive clues, she follows it into concealed parts of her world and the enemy’s larger design. At the center of that design is the Neverseen’s Initiative, a plan that may give them control over Sophie herself. The novel combines investigation with gathering conflict, forcing Sophie to act before she fully understands either the loyalties around her or the role her enemies intend her to play.
