About Shannon Messenger

Shannon Messenger is an American writer of middle-grade and young-adult fantasy, best known for the Keeper of the Lost Cities series. Her fiction uses direct, descriptive prose and conversational dialogue to move between magical discovery, investigation, and the changing loyalties of a large ensemble. Keeper begins with Sophie Foster learning that she is a telepathic elf, leaving her human family, and entering a concealed civilization where her unusual powers are tied to genetic experimentation and a struggle between rival secret groups. That premise supports a long-form structure in which personal questions about memory, parentage, and belonging steadily open onto institutional secrecy and political conflict. Later installments keep those scales intertwined. Nightfall places Sophie’s grief and uncertain alliances inside a search shaped by dangerous bargains and buried history, while Flashback slows the outward action to examine recovery, damaged memory, and distrust before another confrontation. Messenger also varies perspective when useful. Unlocked alternates between Sophie and Keefe, departing from the preceding books’ narrative pattern.
