Arthur Dent is stranded on prehistoric Earth until Ford Prefect pulls him through a space-time anomaly. They arrive at Lord's Cricket Ground shortly before Earth's destruction, where robots attack and steal the Ashes. Slartibartfast recruits Arthur and Ford to stop the robots from assembling the components of the Wikkit Gate. The machines serve the people of Krikkit, whose first encounter with the wider universe led them to wage war against it. Krikkit was then sealed in a time enclosure, and the Gate is needed to release the planet. Arthur later becomes separated from his companions and faces Agrajag, a being seeking revenge across repeated lifetimes, while Arthur, Ford, Trillian, and Slartibartfast race to prevent the Gate's activation and negotiate with Krikkit's people.
