Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, and the crew of the Heart of Gold continue their disorderly journey across the universe after leaving Magrathea. A Vogon interception scatters their plans, while Zaphod’s search for the Ruler of the Universe leads through political turmoil and increasingly absurd worlds, including a planet ruined by shoe-store economics and a machine designed to destroy the mind with cosmic perspective. Meanwhile, the mystery of the Ultimate Question persists, and its missing formulation may be encoded in Arthur’s brainwaves. Their travels eventually bring them to Milliways, a restaurant suspended near the end of the universe. The novel turns cosmic scale, bureaucracy, economics, and humanity’s hunger for meaning into a chain of comic reversals where explanations are rarely more sensible than chaos.
