Hunter and trader Allan Quatermain possesses a map said to lead across unexplored African territory to King Solomon’s legendary diamond mines. Sir Henry Curtis and Captain Good recruit him to guide their search for Sir Henry’s missing brother, and Quatermain agrees in exchange for a share of the treasure and security for his son if he does not return. Joined by the unusually regal Umbopa, the party crosses a deadly desert and mountain barrier before reaching Kukuanaland, a hidden valley with its own army, ancient language, and royal court. To survive there, the travelers pose as supernatural beings. The expedition narrative combines treasure hunting, political danger, and extreme terrain within the assumptions of nineteenth-century imperial adventure.
