Reluctant at first, Pip joins a three-hour murder-mystery party featuring six suspects and 1920s costumes. For the game, the participants’ familiar town becomes the fictional island of Joy, creating a setting for intrigue, deception, and an imagined murder. Pip soon becomes absorbed in the challenge. Playing detective, she works through the available clues as she tries to identify the fictional killer before the time limit expires. Yet even while she concentrates on the staged mystery, another case continues to occupy her thoughts, giving her two investigations to consider during the party.
