During his family’s voyage, Michael is swept overboard and awakens on a remote island with his dog. Food and water appear mysteriously, but his attempts to signal passing ships bring him into conflict with Kensuke, an elderly former Japanese soldier who has lived there in isolation since surviving war and the bombing of Hiroshima. Kensuke initially treats the island as a protected kingdom governed by strict rules, while Michael remains determined to find his parents. Dependence gradually softens suspicion, and the stranded boy develops an extraordinary bond with a man who believes he has lost his own family. Their friendship gives the survival adventure its central dilemma: helping Michael return home may require Kensuke to surrender the secluded life that has sheltered him for decades.
