Menolly is a gifted young musician at Half-Circle Seahold, a coastal community on Pern where survival depends on shelter from a biological menace that falls from space. After the local Harper dies, her parents suppress her songs and forbid her to reveal the teaching and musical abilities her society considers unsuitable for a girl. Heartbroken and increasingly isolated, Menolly leaves the Hold for the dangerous coast, where she must build an independent life beyond her family’s rules. There she discovers fire-lizards and forms a psychic bond with nine hatchlings whose care becomes inseparable from her return to music. Dragonsong blends science-fantasy adventure with a young artist’s struggle against restrictive gender expectations, following creativity as it becomes both a means of survival and a claim to belonging.
