After their parents die, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden fear that adults will separate them or send them to a grandfather they believe is cruel. The four siblings run away together and discover an abandoned boxcar in the woods. With ingenuity and shared labor, they turn it into a home, finding food, making useful objects, and protecting the independence that keeps their family intact. Their hidden life becomes harder to sustain when Violet grows seriously ill and seeking help may expose them. Written as a children’s adventure about cooperation and resourcefulness, the story follows the Aldens as they learn that safety can depend both on self-reliance and on revising fearful assumptions about others.
