During the 1968 Prague Spring, surgeon Tomáš tries to preserve a life of erotic and emotional detachment until Tereza, a café waitress from a small town, follows him to Prague. Their love cannot resolve their opposing understandings of intimacy: Tomáš continues his affairs, while Tereza cannot separate physical desire from emotional fidelity. Sabina, his free-spirited painter confidante, becomes both Tereza’s friend and a source of jealousy. Then the Soviet invasion turns personal uncertainty into political danger, and Tomáš’s refusal to retract his criticism threatens his profession and freedom. Moving among intertwined perspectives, the novel places love, betrayal, exile, and artistic independence inside a philosophical tension between the seeming lightness of freedom and the weight of commitment.
