Journalist Raoul Duke and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, arrive in Las Vegas with a car full of drugs and an assignment to cover a motorcycle race. Their reporting soon dissolves into hotel wreckage, paranoid encounters, and hallucinatory wandering as intoxication makes reality increasingly unstable. Duke narrates the journey through a volatile mixture of reportage, memoir, satire, and fantasy, turning the pair’s excesses into a distorted search for the American dream. Beneath the grotesque comedy lies an elegy for the failed hopes of the 1960s counterculture and an attack on the greed and consumerism that replaced them. Thompson’s gonzo style makes the reporter’s damaged perspective inseparable from the culture he examines.
