After moving with her parents into an old house divided into flats, Coraline Jones grows curious about a locked door that supposedly opens onto a brick wall. On a rainy day, she finds a passage instead. It leads to a parallel home occupied by button-eyed versions of her parents and designed to seem more appealing than her own. A talking black cat warns her that the imitation world is dangerous, and the Other Mother soon reveals the price of staying: Coraline must let buttons be sewn over her eyes. When her real parents disappear, curiosity gives way to a rescue mission. This children’s fantasy-horror novella pits Coraline’s resourcefulness against a predator who turns comfort, boredom, and wish fulfillment into traps.
