Shadow Moon leaves prison early after his wife’s death, only to learn that she had been having an affair with his closest friend. With no home or future waiting for him, he accepts work as bodyguard to the enigmatic Mr. Wednesday and begins a strange journey across the American landscape. Wednesday is recruiting diminished manifestations of ancient gods for a looming conflict with new deities born from technology and modern culture. Pursued by their agents and visited by his revenant wife, Shadow is drawn into a struggle whose motives remain obscure. A period hiding in the Wisconsin town of Lakeside adds a local disappearance to the larger mystery, joining road novel, fantasy, and mythology in a meditation on belief, grief, and national identity.
