George Orwell arrives in revolutionary Barcelona to join the POUM militia, fighting beside international workers and socialists defending the Spanish Republic against Franco’s forces. At the Aragon front, the expected drama of combat gives way to cold, shortages, poor equipment, and long stretches of dangerous inactivity. After Orwell is wounded, the struggle within the Republican side becomes as consequential as the war itself. Political maneuvers turn former allies into targets, the POUM is suppressed, and Orwell must escape Spain. The memoir combines immediate accounts of trenches and street conflict with an effort to understand how propaganda and factional power distort witnessed events. His experience sharpens both his democratic socialism and his enduring opposition to totalitarianism.
