In Clanton, Mississippi, ten-year-old Tonya Hailey is raped by two white supremacists. Her father, Carl Lee, consults local attorney Jake Brigance, then kills the attackers and asks Jake to defend him against a capital-murder charge. The courtroom battle forces Jake to argue for justice within a system shaped by racial prejudice, political ambition, and the prospect of an all-white jury. Outside court, the Ku Klux Klan answers the case with intimidation and violence directed at Jake, his allies, and the community. As legal strategy collides with fear and public anger, the novel examines vengeance, due process, and the unequal meanings that law can acquire across a divided town.
