Rudy Baylor is a third-year law student in Memphis when an elder-law outreach session brings him two clients: an elderly woman needing help and a poor family whose son requires a bone-marrow transplant. The family’s insurer, Great Benefit, has denied the claim, leaving Rudy to confront a powerful company accused of corrupt practices. After his expected job disappears, he enters the rough world of personal-injury law under an unscrupulous employer, then joins Deck Shifflet to build an independent practice and pursue the family’s lawsuit. Alongside the case, Rudy becomes involved with Kelly Riker, a young woman recovering from domestic abuse. The novel follows an inexperienced lawyer learning how money, power, and desperation shape the pursuit of justice.
