About Tahereh Mafi

Tahereh Mafi is an Iranian-American author of young adult fiction whose career is anchored by the dystopian science fiction and romance of the Shatter Me series. Before publishing its first novel, she wrote five manuscripts as a way of learning the form, an apprenticeship that suggests the deliberateness behind the series’ conspicuous voice. Mafi renders extreme emotional states through lyrical, fragmentary prose, stream-of-consciousness movement, and visual devices such as Juliette’s crossed-out thoughts. These techniques keep political conflict close to the character’s unstable sense of self. Across the series and its accompanying novellas, she repeatedly examines what happens when institutions treat unusual ability as a weapon, and when intimacy becomes entangled with fear, coercion, and control. The later books broaden that concern from captivity and rebellion to the difficulty of wielding power after it has been won. What distinguishes this work is the close fit between method and subject: fractured language gives Juliette’s turmoil a visible structure.
