George Packer traces the transformation of American life from 1978 through 2012 through people living inside its economic and political upheavals. Extended narratives follow an Ohio factory worker turned organizer, a North Carolina biodiesel entrepreneur, a Washington lobbyist, technology investor Peter Thiel, and residents of Tampa’s damaged housing market. Brief portraits of figures such as Jay-Z, Newt Gingrich, and Alice Waters interrupt these stories alongside documentary-style fragments, creating a form modeled on John Dos Passos’s U.S.A. trilogy. Manufacturing decline, the subprime mortgage crisis, and money’s expanding political power become parts of a larger breakdown: the weakening of unions, public schools, local businesses, and the promise that steady work and citizenship could secure opportunity and stability.
