Organized into five chapters—wilting, falling, rooting, rising, and blooming—Rupi Kaur’s illustrated poetry collection follows an emotional cycle of injury, descent, recovery, and renewed growth. Spare free verse and minimalist drawings address heartbreak, abuse, self-worth, femininity, and the changing forms of love, while images of plants connect private feeling to seasonal processes of loss and regeneration. The poems also look backward toward ancestry and inherited strength, treating roots as both family history and a source of survival. Expatriation complicates that inheritance: home becomes something sought across countries, relationships, memory, and the self. Moving between intimate confession and brief affirmation, the collection frames healing not as a clean escape from pain but as a continuing effort to honor what formed a person while growing beyond it.
