In twelfth-century England, master builder Tom Builder dreams of constructing a cathedral that will outlast him. His ambition finds a possible home in Kingsbridge, where the resourceful Prior Philip undertakes the rebuilding of a fire-damaged cathedral and hopes the project can revive his impoverished priory and village. Around them, Aliena struggles after a powerful rival family destroys her privileged life, while the gifted Jack grows toward the craft that may transform both the building and the town. Their fortunes unfold during the Anarchy, when disputed royal succession allows local lords to wage private wars and treat justice as another political weapon. Following the cathedral’s construction across decades, the novel joins architectural change—from Romanesque mass toward Gothic height and light—to conflicts over faith, labor, commerce, love, and power.
