In 1929, nine-year-old Chiyo is sold from her coastal village into Kyoto’s Gion district, where the authorities of a geisha house control her labor and future. A hostile senior geisha makes the household more dangerous, but the accomplished Mameha eventually becomes Chiyo’s mentor and secures renewed training for her. Renamed Sayuri, she learns dance, music, dress, makeup, conversation, and the calculated social performances on which a geisha’s livelihood depends. Her progress requires discipline as well as maneuvering through rivalry and unequal power. Told in Sayuri’s first-person voice across the years before, during, and after World War II, the novel follows a life shaped by ambition, dependency, and reinvention as war closes Kyoto’s geisha districts and overturns their intricate world.
